tely I have been really worried about my best friend(we've been friends for 10 years and we are 17). The other day her mom blew up at her and said some really hurtful things, and at one point was even insulting me. and that's not the first time something like that has happened. I have seen it happen sometimes and it looks like her mom is aiming to hurt her. She always brings up the past and says horrible things, like she should just move out, because she didn't care. And one time her mom told her that she should change so her mom could be happy because she makes her feel like shit. I know Her mom has some kind of depression and she takes meds but I don't think they work. Lately my friends has been saying that she cries all the time and isn't happy at her house. She tells me that there is no love in her family. She told me that her family loves each other but they don't show it so it might as well not even be there. And to make it worse she thinks that it is her fault that her family is "screwed up". I'm so worried about her and I want to be able to understand but it kind of seems like she's shutting me out. And I don't know what to say to her, I want her to be able to talk about it but I don't know what to say. And she won't talk about it. I really just need advise on what to say and how to understand

Hi - sorry your friends is having a hard time. Is she still in school - if yes she can speak to counselors at school or encourage her to visit her family doctor. Encourage her to stay on a good road with her education, so she can get a good job and eventually be independent. When she's independent the problems with her mother won't be as magnified. From your perspective, its nice to help but you won't be able to solve her problems - try not to stress yourself out. Let her know you'll ready to listen anytime but encourage her to get professional help from a counselor or therapist.
